By all accounts, Michael Zimmerman is a driven man. Having spent 22 years as a Naval officer, he still rises at 6 am, ready for his daily hour-long walk. Late in the afternoon Michael unwinds at the gym, whipping up a good sweat by lifting weights and working out on the various cardio/fitness machines. On his off time, it’s not unusual to find him and his wife, Toni, out on a hike—they’ve been on some of the Islands’ most challenging trails over the years, including many in Volcano National Park on the Big Island and the Kalalau Trail in Kauai. You see, for Michael, time off isn’t time unchallenged—he’s always setting new goals to achieve.

Setting the Bar

Michael is definitely not one to waste a minute. In addition to his years in the Navy, he holds two graduate degrees and has made 92 skydives. But Michael is the kind of man who never boasts of his achievements. Much more significant to him is striving to live up to the ever higher standards he sets for himself. Indeed, in everything this accomplished professional does, he always sets the bar higher.

Always Driven

Ask Michael where he gets his drive, and he’s quick to point to his father, who spent many years as a reservist in Wisconsin’s National Guard. “He expected much from me,” Michael says, “he’s the one who taught me to be responsible and to do things right the first time.” The lesson proved valuable when Michael joined the Navy after earning a degree in Accounting from Carroll College. An exceptionally effective and detailed supply and logistics officer, he eventually earned the rank of Commander while stationed at the Pentagon. During his Navy service, Michael also earned an MBA from the University of Florida and an MS in Strategic Studies from the Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama.

Michael and his wife, Toni, are avid hikers who love exploring the beauty of the Islands.
